Font - I (30M) live alone in a "meh" house, and working as an engineer, I decided to spoil myself with a nice sports car. It is a 2021 Aston Martin Vantage with manual transmission, for those into cars. It has only two seats.
  • 03
Font - Since it is a rear wheel drive car with a decent amount of power and I live in Canada, I decided to get a cpy SUV (an old Ford Escape) to use during the winter. During the summer, I use my sports car daily and just leave my "winter beater" getting dusty.

Font - One of my neighbors (mid20sF) recently got divorced and became a single mom. Her financial situation got bad, and her ex husband kept their car. Seeing her struggle, I let her use my winter beater during summer. She was thrilled and thankful.

Font - One day of summer, winter beater broke down. Not a surprise. My neighbor was really sad, and when we took it to the mechanic, the repairs would cost more than the car, so it was not worth it (my sports car takes most of my money anyways, I live with not too much things nor luxuries except my car, I am not exactly rich). I decided to junk it and winterize my sports car.

Font - My neighbor didn't like this decision. I said that I wouldn't be paying to repair it and sadly she wouldn't have a car anymore. She said she had a trip planned with her kids, and asked me for my Vantage. I of course refused it, mentioned that she wouldn't be able to drive it (too much power, manual transmission, RWD), and it was also a two-seater, which wouldn't fit her kids anyways. I also don't let anyone else drive it - it's my baby - let alone for a vacation without me.

Font - She stormed back to her house and I simply donated my winter beater to a charity. She posted a long rant in a Facebook group of our neighborhood saying I am a bad neighbor and how I denied her kids a vacation.
  • 08
Font - I replied it mentioning she doesn't even know how to drive a manual car, it is ridiculously dangerous for someone inexperienced to drive it, and it is a two-seater. I told her she would be an irresponsible mom if she just put both her kids in the passanger seat (not only dumb and illegal, but dangerous), and that I have no responsibility in giving my car for two weeks for her to go in a trip, no matter the car. It was a massive reply. I also told I was disappointed with her way of thinkin

Font - Lots of neighbors congratulated me for my decision, but some told me I went too far and should have just ignored her or just said "please remember it is a two-seater, your kids won't fit". A few friends and relatives also told me it was an A-move to do this and that I don't understand the struggles of being a single mom. AITA for exposing her in such an aggressive manner?

Font - RLuna911 Ale Aficionado [11] NTA... she was agressive and instigated by posting. Uou responded and shut it down. Sometimes people need a dose of the medicine they're trying to dish out

Font - TAAITA19082022 OP Thank you! Yeah, it was pretty frustrating to see her going in a public attack even though I gave her tons of reasons why I would not let her have my sports car. The "two-seater factor" should be enough. Glad I did well!

Human body - meeple_people The, "no" should have been enough.

Font - TAAITA19082022 OP. Indeed, I read lots of comments in this sub saying that "no" is a complete answer. But I tried to be polite and gave her reasons why she wouldn't be able to go to a trip with my Vantage. I even left the "I just don't want you and your kids in it" out for politeness.

Font - haplessclerk. And did she expect him to go without a car at all for the two weeks she was on vacation?

Font - 00 TigerLila 7 mo. ago Besides which, you were incredibly kind and generous to loan your neighbor one of your vehicles. It likely would have lasted another winter if it wasn't being driven constantly. If she really wanted to keep driving it, she should have paid for the repairs. How entitled that she thinks you owe her a replacement car.

Font - smilineyz ΝΤΑ - no good deed goes unpunished. You ARE a good neighbor. If she put any detail on the post, most people can see it's a (hot) two seater not suitable for children. I've said: "no thank you" it puzzles people ... like wait I just asked you for something but you're responding as if I just offered you something? Huh? Or like bartleby the scrivener: "I prefer not to."

Font - sezit A hole Aficionado [17] Frustrating to have her attack you for no longer gifting her the use of a free car. At any point, you could have said it's not working out any more, and she should have been grateful for your generosity. It also sounds like she never thanked you or reciprocated in any way. This is called: biting the hand that feeds you.

Rectangle - CARBASSIN GothAdjacent Amazing she could get money for a vacation but not manage to set aside money instead all this time she was borrowing your car to get one of her own...

Font - ResolutionOk3390 I was in a similar situation when my daughter was two. A friend loaned me his Beater..... No air, stick shift with a scetchy clutch, painted neon green and blue.... Very ... Ummm head turning??? I didn't care!! It got me from point A to B. I was soooo grateful!!! I had him over for many home cooked meals. 79 Share Comment deleted by user. TAAITA19082022 OP. That was a nice story! I wish my neighbor did some in return... or at least something good!

Font - [deleted] She's the one who took the complaint public. All you did was defend yourself.

Font - christikayann I gave her tons of reasons why I would not let her have my sports car. The "two-seater factor" should be enough You had two vehicles and were letting her borrow your "extra" SUV. You now have one car that you use and need for day to day transportation: work, groceries, etc. You no longer have an extra vehicle so even if it wasn't a vehicle that was inappropriate for transporting her kids why would she think you would be going without a vehicle for 2 weeks? NTA you no longer
